The Learning Arc

An evidence-based framework for what works in K-12 teaching.

Learning becomes durable when it moves from surface understanding to transfer, and when ownership moves from the teacher to the learner. The Learning Arc names that journey across four levels and four pillars, with equity and the critical use of AI woven through every practice.

Emerging Developing Embedded Sustaining
Thinking gets deeperFrom applying to creating.
Ownership shiftsFrom the teacher to the learner.
Woven throughout — Equity and BelongingRigor is an equity issue. Every practice asks who gets access to deep thinking and belonging.
Woven throughout — Technology and AIAI enhances learning only through critical use and evaluation, never by replacing the work of thinking.

Four pillars, ten components

Each component is described from Emerging to Sustaining, with paired teacher and student practices, what critical AI use looks like, and the evidence that grounds a rating. Choose a component to see the full picture.

Rigorous Thinking

Work worth doing
1Higher-Order & Critical Thinking→Students analyze, evaluate, and create, defending their reasoning with evidence. 2Authentic & Transferable Learning→Students transfer learning to real, unfamiliar problems and audiences.

Clear and Responsive Teaching

Built on how learning works
3Explicit, Structured Instruction→Teaching is clear and sequenced, built on how learning actually works. 4Checks for Understanding & Feedback→Thinking is surfaced constantly, and feedback drives the next step. 5Scaffolding & Differentiation→Supports meet each learner and release toward independence.

Learner Agency

Ownership shifts to the learner
6Metacognition & Self-Regulation→Students set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on their own thinking. 7Student Ownership & Choice→Students drive how they learn and how they show what they know. 8Peer Collaboration→Students build knowledge together, accountable to one another.

Belonging and Culture

Conditions that make rigor possible
9Culturally Responsive & SEL Practice→Identity, relationships, and emotion are leveraged as assets for learning. 10Collaborative & Connected Community→Classroom, school, and families partner as one learning community.
